- Rifle calibers allowed in this course: Minimum: .22 long rifle; Maximum: .300 Win Mag (consideration for potential muzzle blast fatigue on the shooters next to you)
- Stock / Chassis design recommendations: should be able to attach a bi-pod
- Optional: LEGAL Suppressors / Silencers are welcomed (in accordance with all of your local, State & Federal Laws)
Optics and Sighting Systems
- Any configuration of optic or open sights is acceptable for this class. NOTE: If you plan to use your rifle optic in a future RX course, please see that course’s REQUIRED EQUIPMENT LIST for more specific details)
Ammunition
Peripheral Equipment
- Bipods: Students are highly encouraged to use a rifle bipod. Recommended brands include Accu-Tac, Harris, Atlas, or other similar high quality brands. Leg Lengths: 6-9″ may be ideal (for thin to medium framed shooters), 9-13” (may be better for larger framed shooters). No long-leg or extra-tall bipod configurations. Recommended bipod features include: Swiveling/canting design
- Toe Support: A rear bag, shooting-sock, or sandbag will be very helpful
- Optional: A shooting mat may be desirable for comfort
- Hearing protection: Please bring adequate hearing protection that does not inhibit proper cheek weld to your rifle stock.
Rifle Configuration Suggestions: (any rifle or optic configuration is allowed for this FTX)
Rifle
- Rifle should be of sufficient quality / condition to consistently shoot 1 inch groups at 100yds.
- Rifle calibers / cartridges allowed in this course: Minimum: .243/6mm; Maximum: .300 Win Magnum
- Stock or Chassis design requirements: Must be able to attach a bi-pod and should feature an adjustable cheek comb
Optic
- Scope Quality: Overall quality & mechanical precision will be paramount to success at long range
- Magnification:
- for Variable Power Optics: need to reach at least 10X (power ranges similar to 3-12X, 4-16X, or 5-25X may be ideal)
- For fixed power optics: you will need 10X minimum, but no more than 16X is recommended
- Reticle: Must have vertical and horizontal subtensions in either Mil (MRAD) or MOA based units (your preference)
- Scope should feature ‘matching units’ between the reticle and the turrets (Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA) – if possible
- Tube Diameter: 30mm Minimum, larger tubes are generally preferred
- Turret Adjustments: Must offer ‘Tracking Graduation Repeatability’ – MOST IMPORTANT
- Turrets that exhibit good ‘Tracking Precision’ are greatly preferred
- Turret adjustment units that match reticle subtensions (Mil/Mil, or MOA/MOA) are greatly preferred
- Zero Stop mechanisms are very helpful
- Sufficient Turret Elevation Adjustment Range for your cartridge and load: (enough for 1,000 yards – minimum)
Example: If your .308 Win with 168gr match bullets need 37.5moa of available elevation adjustment to reach 1,000 yards, and your scope only has 50moa of total internal adjustment that gives you only half of it (25moa of available elevation), which is not enough. Thus, for this example, you would have to select a scope with at least 75moa of total internal adjustment (1/2 of 75moa is 37.5moa) OR you could add a 20moa tilted scope base giving you (20moa in the titled base + 25moa of adjustment in the optic = 45moa total usable elevation), which is then sufficient to get you to 1,000yds in this example.
Ammunition: use Match Grade Ammo, preferably configured for long range precision shooting, no steel core ammo.
- NOTE: if you are flying into the event, inquire and take note of the TSA’s current ammunition weight limits and requirements as you may need to make arrangements with the range or the venue’s ranch manager to have ammunition shipped to their address ahead of the course of your ammunition bulk weight exceeds their max weight requirements. Please contact the TSA directly for their current rules and regulations if you are flying into the course.
